Gary Payne

The first time I picked up a camera was in 1990, the year I started high school in El Paso, Texas. I was enticed by the school counselor to sign up for a photojournalism class that he described as "Those kids in that photo class run around the halls all the time, so that may be fun for you."

And ever since, I have been running around the halls of my community documenting the world around me.

Over the years, I have worked at many newspaper as an intern, freelancer and staff photographer. The one constant in all those jobs is the importance of communinty coverage. I believe you can get just as good a picture in the U.S. as you can overseas and that each photographer has their own way of telling those stories.

I have won numerous awards which include the Texas APME 2005 Photojournalist of the Year. I make my home with my wife Julie in Denton, Texas, where I also work at the Denton Record-Chronicle.
